Timely Topics
Timing is everything! That includes timing of when we pitch reporters as well as timing of when we pitch seasonal topics. Planning on pitching a seasonal topic? News flash…so are many others! So, how do you make sure you’re ready to go at the ideal time? Preparation is key.
Timing: Depending on the outlet you’re pitching timing will change, but for many pitching about one month out typically is early enough. That means you want to start pitching then as that also allows time for follow up (not too soon after the original outreach).
Recognition of Season/Awareness Month (or week / day): Don’t assume that everyone knows the reason you are pitching, make sure to recognize it. Example – This Mental Wellness Month (January)…
Images/B-roll: Have supporting images, video or audio that is supportive of your narrative and specific to you? Send it!
Media List: Don’t forget to revisit your media list (or create it). Researching reporters takes time and you don’t want to have everything ready to go and no one to send it to.
Utilizing awareness days/weeks/months, holidays and seasons can be a great opportunity to share your story. Just remember you’re competing against others who are thinking the same way so get creative (not too creative) and be prepared!
