Secured Media Coverage… Now What?!

You recently secured an interview with the local news station and had an interview last week. The interview is scheduled to run tomorrow and you’re hoping it will drum up a lot of attention to drive people to your newest location in the area. Media outreach…check, right? Wrong.

One of the benefits of securing media coverage is leveraging it as an opportunity AFTER it runs (and even before in some cases).  Think about all of the channels you have available to recognize the coverage that you received and use them!

Here are just a few ideas to consider…

  • Take photos (make sure to get permission first) during the interview process and post a few (or even a short video teaser) with a well thought out post tagging applicable people and station/publication and post it on your social media channels prior to the interview airing

  • Following the feature, link to the coverage with supportive content and tag appropriate people and station/publication

  • Feature the coverage on your website

  • Include links to the story in award nomination submissions, if applicable

  • Use it as an opportunity to reach out to people and share the coverage

  • Create a slide with snippets of recent coverage for business development purposes

  • Maintain contact with the reporter (don’t be annoying and update them on every little thing, remember…they get tons of emails) and remind them that you can be a source for stories they’re working on or keep them up to date on new news (only new news)

  • Feel free to post it again during an applicable awareness month/week/day or just because…if you have something relevant to say, just don’t do it too often or too soon

Don’t get me wrong, securing media coverage is a huge win in and of itself, just remember there is so much more you can do it – it’s an opportunity!
