Contributing a Column

From an outreach perspective, many tend to go straight for the email pitch to try and secure an interview. But what if I told you there’s an opportunity to be featured in publications by being a contributor? For some, including those who don’t love to be interviewed, this is a great option to express your perspective and recognize your subject matter expertise. Don’t get me wrong, it takes time, and pitching is still required, but it’s a great opportunity and worth the extra effort.

Similar to media outreach in hopes of securing an interview, prep work is required. It’s important to know:

  • What it is that you’re going to write about

  • Your target publication (is it a niche publication, a local outlet, a business site, etc.)

    • Just a reminder that the majority of publications are looking for exclusivity

    • Don’t forget, this includes the audience as well

  • The appropriate editor/contact email alias

    • Do your homework to identify the appropriate contact for contributions

  • How long it will take you to write the column

    • Think positively that you’re going to secure an opportunity to contribute a column, just remember you will still likely have to meet a deadline

    • Bonus points…securing an ongoing column

And, of course, once you secure the opportunity and it’s live make sure to recognize it on social media and on your website, especially if you’re interested in securing more opportunities as it helps with credibility.

JLevin Communications recently secured two column opportunities on behalf of client MD Energy Advisors. Check out the great work from the team below –
